Gates has made a number of investments in the country since long ago, particularly in startups, whether directly or through his supported investment entities such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Breakthrough Energy Ventures. So far, Gates has shown strong interest in sustainable development in Indonesia, particularly in health, technology, and environmental sectors.
